| Remarks | 中国では鶏という文字が吉と同じ発音であることから、鶏そのものに吉祥の意味があるとされた。また、花鳥画において同種の鳥を雌雄２羽描くことは、夫婦和合の象徴と考えられた。そのような意味で、本図は吉祥を主題としているものであろう。和合する雌雄の鶏を詠んだ格調高い自画賛に、款印「弘毅之印」・「剛先」(いずれも白文方印)が据えられる。関防印は「名教中有楽地」、遊印は「経史餘事」である。筆者の崖熊野(1734～1813)は、初め和歌山雑賀に住し、のち新宮に移った儒学者・文人画家である。一説に、南紀熊野に生まれたため、熊野と号したともいわれる。寛政２年(1790)に文学をもって藩に仕え、文化３年(1806)には『紀伊続風土記』の編纂に参与した。 |
