| Remarks | 釈迦の入滅の場面を描いた通例の涅槃図で、悲報を聞いて参集した人々や動物、そして葉の色を失った木々を、横臥する釈迦の周囲に配する図柄である。釈迦の生涯における八大事蹟を釈迦八相と称するが、中でも誕生と入滅を題材とした絵画･彫刻は数多く、4月8日の花祭(灌仏会)や2月15日の涅槃会には、誕生仏や涅槃図を礼拝の対象として法会がいとなまれてきた。本品もまたそうした法会の際に懸垂されたものと考えられる。裱褙墨書によれば、名草郡直川村（和歌山市）の謙蓮社の什物として奉納されたものであることがわかる。 |
